Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with a confirmed cancerous tumour of the oesophagus (food pipe) that requires surgical removal of part or all of the oesophagus.
- People who have one or more risk factors that increase the chance of a complication called an anastomotic leak (where the surgical join between the oesophagus and stomach does not heal properly). These risk factors include: previous stomach surgery such as a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass (but not fundoplication alone); a type of complex repeat surgery called salvage esophagectomy; a planned surgical join made at the neck rather than the chest; or having two or more of the following conditions: diabetes, obesity, coronary artery disease, vascular (blood vessel) disease, steroid use, high blood pressure, current or past smoking, kidney problems, or heart failure.
- People who have agreed to undergo a preparatory procedure on the stomach before the main surgery (called gastric preconditioning).
- People aged 18 or older.
- People who are reasonably well and able to carry out daily activities, based on a standard medical assessment scale (confirm with trial site).
- There are no restrictions based on previous cancer treatments received.
