Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with COPD (a chronic lung condition), with this diagnosis recorded in their GP records for at least 12 months
  • People aged 35 years or older
  • People who have been prescribed prednisolone (a steroid medication) 3 or more times in the past 12 months for flare-ups of their COPD, where each course of prednisolone was at least 14 days apart

  • People who are currently taking, or have taken in the past 12 months, oral steroids (such as prednisolone) every day as a regular ongoing treatment (defined as 10mg or more daily for 6 weeks or longer)
  • People who, in the opinion of the trial team, are unlikely to be able to follow the study requirements
  • People who have another illness (separate from COPD) that is expected to limit their life expectancy to less than 12 months
  • People who are housebound and unable to leave their home
  • People who have had a lung transplant
  • People who use a breathing support machine (non-invasive ventilation) at home

Cumulative dose of oral prednisolone over 12-months*. * excluding short courses of prednisolone prescribed for conditions not related to airway exacerbations (e.g. anaphylaxis, inflammatory bowel disease, cutaneous skin disorders).
