Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 55 years old, of any gender
- People who are able to understand and willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
- People who are no more than moderately unwell (not severely ill)
- People who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder according to standard diagnostic criteria (DSM-5)
- People whose IQ has been assessed at above 70 using a standard test (the WAIS)
- People who do not currently meet the criteria for a substance abuse or dependence disorder, and have not had such a diagnosis in the past 6 months
- People who are currently taking medication at a dose within the range approved for clinical use
- People who do not have another significant mental health diagnosis beyond those considered minor (such as a simple phobia)
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a significant neurological condition or a history of serious head injury
- People with an unstable physical health condition, or significant hearing or vision problems that could interfere with the study
- People for whom MRI scanning is not safe — for example, those with certain metal implants in the body, claustrophobia, or pregnancy
- People for whom the brain stimulation treatment used in this trial (tDCS) is not safe — for example, those with metal implants, a pacemaker, a history of seizures, traumatic brain injury, or stroke
- People assessed as being at significant risk of suicide
- People with any illness, injury, condition, or disability that the lead researcher believes could interfere with completing the study or affect the reliability of the results
- People with a moderate or severe current substance use disorder, defined as having 4 or more out of 11 recognised substance use problems in the past 12 months, or where substance use affects the ability to carry out work, home, or school activities
