Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with a first-time psychotic disorder, including schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, schizoaffective disorder, brief psychotic disorder, psychotic disorder not otherwise specified, bipolar disorder with psychosis, or major depressive disorder with psychosis.
  • People currently experiencing moderate or higher levels of certain psychosis symptoms, such as disorganised thinking, grandiosity, hallucinations, or unusual beliefs, as measured by a standard rating scale.
  • People who are in the early stage of their illness, meaning they have taken antipsychotic medication for a total of 8 weeks or less across their lifetime.
  • People aged 15 to 40 years old.
  • People who are able to understand and sign an informed consent form.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a serious neurological or hormonal (endocrine) condition, or who have experienced a significant brain injury.
  • People who have a medical condition that requires them to take medication that affects mood, thinking, or behaviour.
  • People considered to be at significant risk of harming themselves or others.
  • People who have difficulty with thinking or communication that would prevent them from giving informed consent.
  • People for whom taking an antipsychotic medication on its own would not be medically appropriate (confirm with trial site).
  • People who cannot safely have an MRI scan, for example those with a pacemaker.
  • People who are pregnant, based on self-report.
