Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who took part in and finished the GRASP-AGAIN study and showed improvement in hand function through the use of a nerve-activating device (NAP)
- People who have weakness or reduced movement in one arm caused by a single stroke (either a blocked or bleeding blood vessel in the brain), confirmed by a brain scan
- People whose stroke happened more than one month ago
- People who have at least one of the following hand difficulties: unable to open the fingers to grip a glass using a full-hand grip without help from the other hand (while being able to hold it passively); OR unable to extend the thumb to pick up a spoon handle using a thumb-and-index-finger grip without help from the other hand (while being able to hold the object passively if placed there)
- People who are already receiving care through the standard health system
- People who are able to sit in a chair and stay focused for at least 1.5 hours
- People who have freely given their written consent before enrolling in the study
- People who are covered by a social security or health insurance scheme
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently in labour or breastfeeding
- People who are pregnant (confirmed through questioning or a blood test if needed)
- People who have tightness or stiffness in the fingers or wrist that prevents the fingers from being opened passively
- People whose arm movement is too limited to position the hand in front of the body at the midline while seated (confirm with trial site)
- People who experience pain in the affected arm that interferes with completing the standardised gripping tasks
- People with significant loss of sensation in the arm, based on a specific sensory assessment score falling below a set threshold (confirm with trial site)
- People with severe difficulty understanding or producing language, based on a specific language assessment score (confirm with trial site)
- People with a known condition affecting the ability to perform purposeful movements (apraxia), within the limits of their physical ability
- People with a condition affecting awareness of one side of space, where a specific visual test shows a significant difference between the left and right sides
- People whose finger or thumb muscles cannot be activated enough through electrical stimulation to perform gripping tasks, or where that stimulation is not tolerated
- People who have a pacemaker
- People with epilepsy that is not currently controlled
- People with unstable heart or cardiovascular conditions, such as coronary artery disease, severely high blood pressure, or heart failure
- People with a skin condition that would make it unsafe to apply surface electrodes
- People currently enrolled in another research study that has an active exclusion period
- People under legal guardianship or conservatorship
- People who decline to sign the consent form
- People for whom it is not possible to properly explain the study or ensure their understanding due to physical or psychological health difficulties
