Who might be able to join this trial:
- People whose condition has been diagnosed as a stroke (either a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain) confirmed by CT or MRI scan, meeting recognised stroke diagnosis guidelines
- People who are experiencing their first ever stroke
- People who have very little or no muscle strength (grade 1 or below) in the muscles that open and close the fingers on the affected hand
- People who are right-handed
- People whose muscle stiffness in the affected limb is at a mild-to-moderate level (Ashworth scale grade 2 or below)
- People whose stroke occurred within the last 6 months and whose condition is currently stable
- People aged between 18 and 75 years old, with normal vision and hearing, or vision and hearing that has been corrected to normal (for example, with glasses or hearing aids)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who score below 20 on a standard memory and thinking test (MMSE), or who have severe difficulties with memory, communication, understanding speech, or are unable to cooperate with assessments and treatment
- People who have a history of epilepsy (seizures)
- People who have previously had a stroke, a brain injury, or a brain tumour
- People who have nerve damage outside of the brain (peripheral nervous system injuries) that is not related to the current stroke, as confirmed by imaging
- People who have problems with vision or spatial awareness, such as partial vision loss or difficulty noticing one side of their surroundings
- People who have a gap or opening in their skull, or metal plates in their skull
- People who are not suitable for a type of brain activity scan called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (confirm with trial site)
- People who have previously had surgery inside the skull
- People whose stroke damage is located in the cerebellum or brainstem (areas at the lower back of the brain)
