Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 40 and 80 years old at the time of joining
- People who have been diagnosed with arthritis at the base of the thumb, graded as stage 1, 2, or 3 on a standard medical scale (known as the Eaton-Littler classification)
- People who experience pain at rest or pain that limits the use of their hand, where surgery has been recommended
- People who have tried non-surgical treatments for at least 3 months without enough relief — such as a splint or brace, over-the-counter pain relief, or a cortisone injection
- People who, in the treating surgeon's assessment, are suitable candidates for either a joint replacement or a procedure to remove a small wrist bone (trapezectomy)
- People who do not smoke, or who have completely stopped smoking for at least 6 weeks before surgery
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had previous surgery on the base of the thumb or a nearby joint (the STT-joint)
- People who have an ongoing chronic pain condition
- People who have dementia or a condition affecting thinking and memory
- People where a specific small wrist bone (the trapezium) measures less than 7 mm in height on an X-ray
- People who are currently smoking
- People whose thumb base arthritis has been graded as stage 4 on the Eaton-Littler scale
