Who might be able to join this trial:
- Female participants between the ages of 14 and 45 years old.
- People who have been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that can affect menstrual cycles and hormone levels.
- For adults, a PCOS diagnosis made according to 2023 international guidelines, based on irregular or absent ovulation and/or irregular periods, along with signs of higher-than-normal male hormones (either through symptoms, blood tests, or an ultrasound scan), after other conditions have been ruled out.
- For teenagers, a PCOS diagnosis made using guidelines specific to adolescents, where both irregular periods/ovulation and signs of higher-than-normal male hormones are required — after other conditions have been ruled out.
- People whose periods are considered irregular, which includes various patterns depending on how long it has been since periods first started (confirm with trial site for the specific timing definitions that apply).
- People who have not used blood-thinning medications, blood-clotting medications, the contraceptive pill, or other medications that may affect hormones, insulin, glucose, or blood clotting within the 3 months before blood samples are taken.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently pregnant.
- People who have a blood or bleeding disorder.
- People with a history of cancer.
- People who have used certain medications within the 12 weeks before enrolling that could interfere with the study's results.
- People who have other medical conditions that can also cause high male hormone levels or irregular ovulation, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing syndrome, hypothalamic amenorrhea, thyroid disease, high prolactin levels, or premature ovarian insufficiency.
- People who have conditions that may affect the levels of two specific proteins measured in the study (protein C and protein S), such as antiphospholipid syndrome, liver disease, or a cancer-related condition.
- Teenagers whose only sign pointing to PCOS is an ultrasound appearance of the ovaries, without the other required criteria being present.
