Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Women between the ages of 30 and 65
  • People who have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis through both a physical examination and imaging (such as an X-ray or scan)

For Group 1 — knee osteoarthritis with lipedema:

  • People whose condition meets the Wold clinical criteria for a diagnosis of lipedema (a condition involving abnormal fat distribution, usually in the legs)
  • People whose ultrasound results show an increase in the layer of fat just beneath the skin

For Group 2 — knee osteoarthritis without lipedema:

  • People who have not been diagnosed with lipedema
  • People who have been assessed and do not have lymphedema (fluid swelling) or venous (vein-related) disease

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have an inflammatory type of arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis)
  • People who have previously had surgery on their knee
  • People who have had an injection directly into a knee joint within the last 6 months
  • People who have experienced a recent acute (sudden) knee injury
  • People who have a systemic connective tissue disease (a condition affecting the body's supporting tissues throughout the body)
  • People who have severe vein problems or lymphedema (significant fluid swelling in the limbs)
  • People who have a history of cancer
  • People who are currently taking certain medications — specifically gabapentinoids, SNRIs, or SSRIs — for fibromyalgia or a psychiatric condition (confirm specific medications with trial site)
  • People who have severe cognitive (thinking or memory) difficulties or communication problems that would prevent them from taking part
  • People who are pregnant
  • People who were told about the study and chose not to participate
