Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 40 years of age or older
- You have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) — a long-term lung condition that makes it hard to breathe — either confirmed by a breathing test or based on your medical history
- You are currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) because your breathing has become severely difficult and you need machine support to help you breathe
- You are being helped to breathe either by a tube connected to a breathing machine (invasive ventilation) or by a mask-based breathing support device (non-invasive ventilation)
- Your medical team has decided you may be ready to begin reducing or stopping the breathing machine support, and you are in the process of being tested to see if you can breathe more on your own
Who may not be able to join:
- You are under 40 years of age
- Your breathing problems are mainly caused by something other than COPD — for example, pneumonia alone or a heart-related fluid build-up in the lungs not linked to a COPD flare-up
- You have a known condition affecting the nerves or muscles that control your breathing
- You have a significant deformity or disorder of the chest wall that affects how your lungs work (confirm with trial site)
- You already have a tracheostomy (a surgical opening in your throat for breathing) at the start of the study
- Your blood pressure or circulation is very unstable and requires high doses of medications to keep it stable at the time of assessment
- It is not possible to perform an ultrasound scan of your breathing muscles — for example, because of large wound dressings or poor image quality
- You are not alert or conscious enough to be properly assessed, unless this is expected as part of your treatment with the mask-based breathing support
- You or your legal representative have declined to give consent to take part
