Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with anorexia nervosa:

  • You are a woman between 18 and 45 years old who has not yet gone through menopause
  • You have been diagnosed with severe, long-term anorexia nervosa that has lasted at least 7 years, has affected your daily life, and has not improved with previous treatments
  • Your current body weight (BMI) is 18.5 or below, or it was recorded at 18.5 or below at some point in the past 12 months
  • You are able to understand and agree to take part in the study yourself
  • You can read and speak German well enough to take part

For healthy volunteers (comparison group):

  • You are a woman between 18 and 45 years old
  • Your body weight (BMI) falls between 18.5 and 24.9
  • You have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder at any point in your life
  • You do not have a significant mental health condition
  • You are able to understand and agree to take part in the study yourself

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have a serious physical health condition that affects your metabolism or brain function, such as uncontrolled thyroid, liver, kidney, or heart disease
  • You are currently experiencing psychosis or are in an acute suicidal crisis
  • You are currently engaging in serious self-harm that does not involve suicidal intent
  • You are dependent on alcohol or drugs
  • You are taking medications that significantly affect your hormones or metabolism, including high-dose steroid tablets, hormonal contraceptives (such as the pill), or certain mental health medications like antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilisers, or anti-anxiety medications
  • You have tested positive for HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C
  • You have an intellectual disability that would make it difficult to fully understand and agree to take part in the study
  • You do not have sufficient proficiency in German to participate
