Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older
- People who have been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) based on clinical assessment and a camera examination of the bowel, or people who do not have IBD (for the control group)
- People who are willing to take part in the study
- People who have the mental ability to fill in questionnaires
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have diabetes
- People who have symptoms that suggest a urinary tract infection
- Women who are currently menstruating (urine testing may be done within a window of 3 days before a period starts or 3 days after it ends)
- People who are not willing to take part in all of the study procedures
- People under 18 or over 80 years of age
- People who are pregnant
- People with other serious health conditions that could affect kidney-related laboratory test results
- People who have had previous surgery that could affect kidney-related laboratory test results
- People who have done extreme endurance exercise (such as a marathon, half-marathon, or triathlon) in the 7 days before testing, or intense strength training in the 24 hours before testing (note: moderate exercise such as walking, swimming, or cycling is not a concern)
- People who have consumed excessive alcohol in the 14 days before the study
- People for whom necessary tests — such as imaging — cannot be completed
- People whose registry data is incomplete, where the study relies on registry records
- People who are dehydrated
- People who have used medications that can harm the kidneys in the month before or during the study — this includes certain anti-inflammatory drugs used for 10 or more days, gold salts, penicillamine, interferon alpha, tuberculosis medications, pamidronate, biseptol, antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, certain anti-seizure medications, cyclosporine A, tacrolimus, certain Chinese herbal medicines, or cancer drugs such as cisplatin
- People who started taking certain blood pressure or kidney-protecting medications (angiotensin inhibitors, sartans, or flozins) less than 3 months before the study
