Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are between 18 and 70 years old at the time of joining the trial.
• People who have had a stroke affecting the deeper parts of the brain (including the brain stem) that happened at least 9 months ago but no more than 10 years ago.
• People whose upper limb movement scores below 25 on a standardised arm movement scale called the Fugl-Meyer upper-limb scale.
• People who are able to stand, with or without a walking aid, for at least 30 seconds.
• People who score above 22 on a standardised memory and thinking assessment called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.
• People who have weakness or paralysis affecting one side of the body (either left or right).
• People who have already completed their standard rehabilitation treatment.
• People who are willing and able to sign an informed consent form before any study procedures begin.
• People who can understand and communicate with the study team in either French or English.
• People who agree to follow all study conditions and attend all scheduled appointments.
• Women who are able to become pregnant and agree to use effective contraception throughout the study.
• People who are able to temporarily stop taking blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications around the time of any surgeries involved in the study, if applicable.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
• People who plan to become pregnant during the study period.
• People who have health conditions that would increase the risks associated with implantation surgery.
• People who have been assessed by a psychologist as having mental health instability, including a diagnosed personality disorder, psychosis, substance abuse issues, or severe depression.
• People who have other medical conditions that the trial investigators determine would prevent them from taking part in testing (for example, major cognitive disorders, kidney failure, liver problems, or epilepsy).
• People who have significant ongoing difficulty swallowing, problems with food or liquid entering the airway, or who require a ventilator to breathe.
• People who have an active implanted device already in their body, such as a pacemaker or another nerve stimulator.
• People who have spinal abnormalities or physical incompatibilities that would make the implant surgery impossible or unsafe.
• People who have severe muscle stiffness (spasticity) in their arm or leg, scoring above 3 on a scale called the Modified Ashworth Scale.
• People who need to have frequent MRI scans for any ongoing medical reason.
• People who are currently participating in another clinical study involving drugs or medical devices that could affect this study's results.
• People who are investigators on this study, or their family members, employees, or others in a dependent relationship with them.
