Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged between 65 and 90 years old.
  • People who were diagnosed with a stroke (either a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain) more than 6 months before joining the trial.
  • People who are currently receiving home care services through one of the participating home care agencies.
  • People who are able to follow instructions and take part in swallowing exercises.
  • People who score at or above a certain level on a standard memory and thinking test (called the MMSE), with some allowance made depending on education level.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had head or neck cancer, or radiation treatment to the head or neck area.
  • People who have had surgery on the cervical spine (neck bones) or have had a tracheostomy (a surgical opening in the throat for breathing).
  • People who have a serious neurological or neuromuscular condition that affects their ability to swallow.
  • People who have serious or unstable health conditions at the time of the trial.
  • People who are currently taking medications that significantly affect swallowing ability or muscle tone.
  • People who would not be able to complete the full program of activities or follow-up appointments.
  • People who are receiving all their nutrition through a feeding tube and are unable to eat or drink by mouth.
