Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are over 18 years of age
  • People who have been diagnosed with a stroke that has caused weakness on the left side of the body
  • People whose stroke occurred at least 6 months ago
  • People whose hand and arm movement has recovered to a certain level, as measured by a standard scale called the Brunnstrom staging system (stage 4 or 5 for the hand, and stage 4, 5, or 6 for the upper arm) (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are able to sit in a chair for 30 minutes without needing support, based on a balance assessment called the Trunk Impairment Scale
  • People who score 24 points or more on a standard memory and thinking test called the Mini Mental Test

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who do not wish to take part in the study
  • People whose affected arm and hand muscles are too stiff or tight to pick up and let go of objects, based on a stiffness scale called the Modified Ashworth Scale (levels 3 or 4)
  • People who have a joint in their affected arm that is permanently stiff or locked in position (contracture)
  • People who have a severe attention or awareness problem affecting one side of space, based on a test called the Catherine Bergego Scale (scoring 21 or higher)
  • People who are unable to cooperate, follow instructions, or behave consistently during the assessments used in the study
  • People who have thinking or memory difficulties severe enough to prevent communication or following simple instructions (scoring below 24 on the Mini-Mental Test)
  • People who have other neurological or bone and joint conditions that may affect how they move or sit
  • People who have severe vision or hearing problems that cannot be corrected with aids such as glasses, contact lenses, or hearing aids
