Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older.
- People with a confirmed diagnosis of oesophageal or gastro-oesophageal junction (GOJ) cancer, based on tissue biopsy results, including specific cancer types such as adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and several others.
- People whose tumour is located in the upper, middle, or lower part of the oesophagus.
- People whose tumour may extend slightly below the GOJ into the stomach, provided the main bulk of the tumour is in the oesophagus or GOJ area and does not extend more than 5 cm into the stomach (confirm with trial site).
- People whose cancer is at a stage considered suitable for curative treatment with chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy, with no spread to distant parts of the body, as confirmed by a specialised PET/CT scan.
- People with a general health and activity level rated as reasonably functional, based on a standard medical scale (confirm with trial site).
- People whose blood counts, kidney function, and liver function meet the minimum levels required by the trial.
- People who are able to give written consent before any trial procedures begin.
- People who are able to attend scheduled appointments and follow the study procedures.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have pre-cancerous changes in the oesophagus (high grade dysplasia) without confirmed invasive cancer.
- People whose cancer has already spread to distant parts of the body.
- People who have affected lymph nodes at both the collarbone area and the upper abdominal area at the same time.
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the chest or upper abdomen in a way that would make it unsafe to deliver the planned radiation treatment.
- People who have previously received chemotherapy for oesophageal or stomach cancer.
- People who currently have an oesophageal stent (a tube placed inside the oesophagus to keep it open).
- People with an active infection that is not under control.
- People with serious ongoing health conditions affecting the lungs, heart, or liver that would make combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment unsafe.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People with a known allergy or sensitivity to the chemotherapy drugs paclitaxel or carboplatin, or any of their ingredients.
- People with a history of other cancers, with some exceptions — certain limited or non-invasive cancers (such as a common type of skin cancer, or early-stage breast or cervical conditions) may still be eligible (confirm with trial site).
