Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are male and 18 years of age or older
  • You have been diagnosed with a non-cancerous enlarged prostate (commonly called BPH — benign prostatic hyperplasia)
  • You are already scheduled to have an open surgical procedure to remove part of the prostate (called an open simple prostatectomy)
  • Your overall health has been rated as acceptable for surgery by a standard medical assessment (ASA physical status I–III — confirm with trial site if unsure what this means for you)
  • You are able and willing to sign a written consent form to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are unwilling or unable to give written consent to take part
  • You are scheduled for prostate surgery because of prostate cancer (radical prostatectomy) rather than a non-cancerous enlarged prostate
  • Your surgery is needed urgently or in an emergency
  • You have a known blood clotting disorder or a significantly low platelet count (cells that help blood clot)
  • You are currently taking blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications that cannot be safely stopped before the procedure, based on your hospital's guidelines
  • You have a medical reason why spinal anesthesia (an injection to numb the lower body) cannot be used for you (confirm with trial site)
  • You are currently taking part in another clinical trial that could affect the results of this study
  • You are expected to receive a specific clot-reducing medication called tranexamic acid, or any other blood-clotting agent, around the time of your surgery
