Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are a woman aged 18 or older
  • You have already been recommended by a specialist breast team to have a mastectomy (surgery to remove the breast) for one of the following reasons: you carry a gene mutation that increases your risk of breast cancer, you have a non-invasive breast condition called DCIS, or you have early-stage breast cancer
  • Your cancer or breast condition does not involve the skin, and there is no sign of disease very close to the skin, nipple, or chest muscle (as shown on an MRI scan)
  • You have been recommended for a specific type of breast reconstruction called a DIEP flap (where tissue from the tummy is used to rebuild the breast)
  • You speak and understand English fluently
  • You are healthy enough to have a general anaesthetic (be put to sleep for surgery)
  • You are willing and able to sign a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your breast cancer has spread to involve the skin
  • You are having reconstruction on both breasts at the same time using a DIEP flap, or you are having a different type of reconstruction (such as implants, a TRAM flap, or a LD flap)
  • You are currently pregnant
  • You are currently breastfeeding
  • You are not able to read or understand English well enough to sign a consent form without an interpreter
