Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are willing and able to give informed consent to participate in the study
- People who are willing and able to follow the study requirements throughout the trial
- People between the ages of 25 and 80 years old
- People who have used English as their main language for more than 15 years
- People who have been diagnosed with aphasia (difficulty with language) caused by a stroke on the left side of the brain, confirmed by a study doctor using a past or recent brain scan
- People who are more than 6 months past the date of their stroke
- People who have been diagnosed with a specific type of aphasia called Broca's aphasia, based on results from a standardised language test called the WAB-R, with specific scores across fluency, comprehension, repetition, and naming
- People who correctly name 140 or fewer items on a picture naming test called the Philadelphia Naming Test (PNT)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had brain surgery, other than surgery performed as part of emergency stroke treatment
- People who have had seizures (fits) in the past 12 months
- People who have skin problems such as rashes, eczema, wounds, or infections on or near where electrodes would be placed on the head
- People who correctly name more than 140 out of 175 items on the pre-treatment Philadelphia Naming Test
- People whose WAB-R Aphasia Quotient score is 25 or below (a measure of overall language ability)
- People who have an opening in the skull larger than 1 cm in the area where an electrode would be placed, or who have metal implants or electrical devices in the body (confirm with trial site)
- People who require continuous oxygen therapy that cannot be paused for more than one hour
- People with any other condition or situation that the lead researcher determines would significantly interfere with completing the study
