Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 16 years of age or older
- People who have been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), confirmed through their primary care medical records
- People who have been regularly taking a type of medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) — a common stomach acid-reducing medicine — for more than 6 months before joining the trial
- People who have been taking their PPI medication as prescribed, meaning they have taken more than 75% of their doses
- People who are able to give their own full and informed consent to participate
- People whose IBD has been stable, meaning no changes to their medication and no IBD-related surgery in the past 3 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are unable to fully take part in all parts of the trial
- People who have a condition called Barrett's oesophagus (a change in the lining of the food pipe)
- People who had signs of peptic (stomach or digestive) disease found during a recent camera examination of their upper digestive system
- People who have a condition called Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, which causes excess stomach acid
- People who have a condition called eosinophilic oesophagitis (a type of inflammation in the food pipe)
- People who regularly use anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or naproxen (known as NSAIDs)
- People who have pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs)
- People who have declined to allow their data to be shared
- People with a history of dementia
- People who have a terminal illness
- People who currently have cancer or another malignancy
- People with an active history of mental illness
- People who are living in a care home
- People with alcohol misuse issues
- People with illicit drug misuse issues
