Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 years or older
  • People who have had their first-ever stroke affecting one side of the brain, either caused by a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain
  • People who have some difficulty moving or using one of their arms as a result of the stroke
  • People whose affected arm has a low-to-moderate level of muscle stiffness (confirmed using a standard medical scale called the Modified Ashworth Scale, with a score below 3)
  • People whose thinking and memory abilities are largely intact (confirmed using a standard test called the MoCA, with a score above 24)
  • People who are medically stable and well enough to take part in an intensive rehabilitation programme
  • People who are able to understand and follow the study instructions
  • People who have given written consent to participate in the trial

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with a severe language or communication disorder (called severe aphasia) that would prevent them from taking part, based on their medical records
  • People whose stroke has affected both sides of the brain
  • People with serious or unstable health conditions — such as uncontrolled seizures or heart failure — that would make rehabilitation unsafe or not possible
  • People with other neurological conditions (affecting the brain or nervous system) or psychiatric (mental health) conditions
  • People with a recent arm or wrist fracture that has not yet fully stabilised
