Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are HIV-1 positive and your HIV viral load (the amount of virus in your blood) is below 2,000 copies/ml without taking any HIV medications.
- You are HIV-1 positive, taking a stable HIV medication regimen, your virus is undetectable in your blood, but your immune cells (CD4 T-cells) have stayed below 350 for the past 12 months.
- You are HIV-1 positive, have never taken HIV medications before, and are planning to start taking them — any blood test results are acceptable for this group.
- You have been HIV-positive for at least 10 years, have not taken any HIV medications for 10 or more years, and your immune cell count (CD4 T-cells) has always stayed above 500 — any viral load is acceptable for this group.
Who may not be able to join:
- You currently have an active serious infection related to a weakened immune system, or you have been treated for one in the last 4 months (a mouth yeast infection is generally still acceptable).
- You are currently receiving treatment for cancer.
- You are currently being treated for hepatitis C with a treatment that includes interferon.
- You have taken medications that suppress the immune system within the last 4 months.
