Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with Hyperinsulinism (HI) who are receiving care at the Cook Children's Congenital Hyperinsulinism Center and are being treated by an Endocrinologist connected to the trial.
- People whose Endocrinologist has determined that standard medications have not worked safely, and where surgery has been recommended to prevent severe low blood sugar episodes and protect brain function.
- People whose blood sugar has dropped below 70 mg/dL even while on anti-hypoglycemic medications such as diazoxide or octreotide.
- People who are unable to go without food for age-appropriate periods without their blood sugar falling dangerously low — specifically: more than 12 hours for infants under 1 year, more than 15 hours for children aged 1–3 years, or more than 18 hours for children over 3 years.
- People whose genetic test results do not confirm a "diffuse" form of HI — this includes people with no genetic test results available, negative genetic test results, or results that do not show certain inherited gene changes (confirm with trial site).
- People thought to have a localised ("focal") form of HI or a specific type of insulin-producing growth, whose blood sugar is currently manageable, but whose family wishes to pursue surgery for a possible cure.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not have a diagnosis of Hyperinsulinism (HI).
- People whose genetic testing confirms the "diffuse" form of HI disease.
- People who are currently pregnant.
- Breastfeeding mothers who are unwilling to stop breastfeeding for 48 hours after receiving the imaging agent used in this trial (Fluorodopa F 18).
- People with a known allergy to the imaging agent Fluorodopa F 18.
