Study Group (people being evaluated for a digestive nerve/muscle condition):

  • You are scheduled to have a surgical biopsy (a small tissue sample taken through surgery) from your stomach and/or the upper part of your small intestine to investigate a possible nerve or muscle problem in your digestive system

Control Group (comparison participants, one of the following):

  • You are scheduled for surgery to remove part of the esophagus, a sleeve gastrectomy for obesity, or a gastric bypass procedure
  • You are scheduled for a Whipple procedure (a type of surgery involving the digestive organs)
  • You are scheduled for a transplant surgery
  • You are an organ donor undergoing surgery

Who may not be able to join:

Study Group:

  • There is any medical reason why you cannot safely have a surgical biopsy
  • You have a serious heart, kidney, lung, or liver condition
  • You have a significant blood clotting problem
  • You are unable to walk independently or live in a nursing home
  • You are pregnant
  • You are unable to give your own consent to participate
  • You are currently a prisoner

Control Group:

  • You have previously been diagnosed with gastroparesis (a condition where the stomach empties too slowly)
  • You have previously been diagnosed with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (a long-term condition where the bowel acts as if it is blocked without an actual blockage)
  • You are unable to give your own consent (unless you are an organ donor)
