Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who are fluent in the Italian language
  • People who do not have cognitive impairment (such as memory or thinking problems)
  • People who have a confirmed or working diagnosis of one of the following cancers at an advanced stage: lung cancer (stage IIIB "wet" or stage IV, not being treated with the aim of curing the disease), pancreatic cancer (any stage), gastrointestinal cancer (stage IV), ovarian or fallopian tube cancer (stage III or IV), other gynaecological cancers (stage IV), or breast, genitourinary, sarcoma, melanoma, or endocrine cancers (stage IV), with an expected survival of 12 to 18 months
  • People whose score on a distress questionnaire meets a certain threshold — specifically, a score of 10 or above on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), or 20 or above on the Death and Dying Distress Scale (DDAS) (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have significant difficulties with communication
  • People who are unable to commit to attending 6 sessions — for example, due to being too unwell to participate or having no way to get to the sessions
  • People who are currently seeing a psychotherapist
