Who might be able to join this trial:
- Men and women between 18 and 80 years of age
- People with high blood pressure that is not well controlled, whether or not they are currently being treated for it — specifically, a clinic blood pressure reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher, and an average 24-hour blood pressure monitor reading of 130/80 mmHg or higher
- People who own, or have a close contact who owns, a smartphone that works with the ESH CARE app and is able to use it
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose kidneys are not working well enough, based on a specific blood test result (confirm with trial site)
- People with very severely high blood pressure of 200/120 mmHg or above, even while being treated
- People whose high blood pressure is caused by another known medical condition
- People who experience a significant drop in blood pressure when standing up (a fall of more than 20 mmHg in the upper number)
- People with unstable or serious health conditions and a short life expectancy
- People with a known diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm)
- People with liver disease, indicated by certain liver enzyme levels being more than twice the normal range
- People with a history of stomach or bowel surgery or conditions that could affect how the body absorbs medication
- People who have had a cancer diagnosis — including leukaemia or lymphoma, but not basal cell skin cancer — within the last 5 years
- People with a significant history of autoimmune conditions, such as lupus
- People with a history of drug or alcohol misuse within the last 5 years
- People who have a history of not following medical treatment plans, or who are considered unlikely to do so reliably
- People who have been clinically diagnosed with dementia
- People who are unwilling or unable to give free and informed consent to take part
- People who are unable to use basic communication technology
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study period
