Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have Type 1 diabetes and are between 18 and 50 years old (the trial is looking for 32 men and 32 women).
- Your recent blood sugar control test (HbA1c) result is below 11.0%.
- You have not been diagnosed with diabetes-related complications such as eye disease, nerve damage, or skin ulcers.
- Your body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) is below 40.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently pregnant.
- You are not able to give your own free and informed consent to participate.
- You are taking blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medications, have anemia, or have a known bleeding disorder.
- You are currently taking any of the following types of medication: non-selective beta blockers, sleeping pills or sedatives, anti-seizure medications, Parkinson's disease medications, antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, stimulants, opioids, or hallucinogens.
- You have had a recent serious illness, or have a past history of severe depression, mania, or psychotic illness.
- You score higher than 50 on a standard depression assessment scale.
- You are unwilling or unable to use an approved method of contraception during the trial.
- Your screening tests or physical examination show results that are considered medically significant.
- You have a history of severely uncontrolled high blood pressure (above 160/100), heart disease, or a stroke or similar event.
- You have a significant heart condition (such as heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or other cardiac abnormalities), either from your medical history or from a heart stress test (required if you are 40 or older).
- You currently have pneumonia.
- You have liver failure or jaundice.
- Your kidney filtering measure (creatinine) is above 1.6 mg/dl.
- You are currently experiencing an acute stroke or neurological episode.
- You have a fever above 38°C (100.4°F).
- Your blood count (hematocrit) is below 32 on lab tests.
- Your white blood cell count is below 3 or above 14 (thousand per microlitre) on lab tests.
- Your liver function test results are more than twice the upper limit of the normal range on lab tests.
- Your total bilirubin level is above 2 mg/dl on lab tests (confirm with trial site).
- Your alkaline phosphatase level is above 150 U/L on lab tests (confirm with trial site).
- You test positive for HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C.
- Your liver enzyme levels are more than twice the normal level on lab tests.
