Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer (confirmed by biopsy) that is at a certain stage (T3-4 and/or has spread to nearby lymph nodes), has not been treated before, can be removed by surgery, and is located within 12 cm of the anal opening
- Men or women who are not pregnant
- People aged between 18 and 70 years old
- People whose blood cell counts and haemoglobin levels are within acceptable ranges, showing the bone marrow is working well enough
- People whose kidneys are functioning well enough, based on a blood test result within acceptable limits
- People whose liver is functioning well enough, based on blood test results within acceptable limits
- People who are well enough to carry out most daily activities, as measured by a standard performance scale (KPS score of 70 or above)
- People who have given written consent to participate before joining the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose cancer has come back or has spread to other parts of the body
- People who are already receiving other cancer treatments or therapies
- People who are unlikely to be able to complete the full trial due to low likelihood of following the required steps
- People who have another serious or life-threatening illness that is not under control
- People who have significant problems with the heart, brain, lungs, or other major organs
