Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer (a type of gland-based cancer located in the lower part of the bowel, below a certain internal boundary called the peritoneal reflection), confirmed through a tissue test

• People whose tumor is considered removable by surgery with the aim of clearing all cancer

Who may not be able to join:

• People with a past history of another type of cancer
• People with multiple colorectal cancers at the same time, or a condition called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), which is an inherited bowel condition
• People who also have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
• People whose cancer has come back after previous treatment, or has grown into nearby organs
• People whose cancer is causing a blockage, a tear in the bowel, or serious bleeding that requires emergency surgery
• People whose tumor has grown into specific muscles or structures around the bowel (the external sphincter, levator ani muscle, or adjacent organs)
• People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the past 4 weeks
• People who are rated as being in poor general health according to standard medical scoring tools used by anaesthetists and oncologists (confirm with trial site for exact scoring thresholds)
• People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People who have a serious infection before surgery
• People with a psychological disorder
• People with severe organ dysfunction or other medical reasons that make participation unsafe
• People who have had a heart attack within the past six months
• People with severe lung conditions such as emphysema or pulmonary fibrosis
• People excluded based on the treating doctor's clinical judgment
• People where, during surgery, the tumor is found to have grown into other organs, or the tumor location does not match the original assessment
