Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are able to give their informed consent to participate
  • People who are willing to be randomly assigned to a study group
  • People whose top blood pressure number (systolic) is between 120 and 159 mmHg

  • People whose fasting blood sugar is below 126 mg/dL
  • People with a normal heart tracing (ECG) both at rest and during a treadmill exercise test

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose top blood pressure number is below 120 or 160 mmHg or higher
  • People currently taking blood pressure-lowering medications
  • People with another ongoing health condition, such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or cancer
  • People who currently smoke
  • People with alcohol dependence or problematic alcohol use
  • People with uncontrolled thyroid disease, or whose thyroid medication has changed in the past 3 months
  • People whose blood pressure responds in an abnormal way during exercise (confirm with trial site)
  • People who already do regular intense aerobic exercise — specifically more than 4 sessions per week, lasting more than 30 minutes each, at a high level of effort
