Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Children who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and also have a known genetic problem affecting their immune system
  • The Type 1 diabetes diagnosis must be confirmed by blood sugar tests, tests of how the insulin-producing cells are working, and tests looking for certain antibodies in the blood
  • The child must also have damage to at least one organ outside the pancreas — this could include conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, kidney problems, repeated infections of the mouth, skin, or body, liver inflammation, eye inflammation, adrenal gland problems, pituitary gland problems, rheumatoid disease, blood vessel inflammation, lupus, or other organ damage (not including thyroid problems) — and the condition must have come back even after receiving standard medical treatment
  • A gene test (gene sequencing) must have found a specific gene change that research has shown leads to immune system problems, multiple organ damage, and a poor outlook without treatment

Who may not be able to join:

  • People for whom an established and effective treatment already exists for their condition
  • People who test positive for HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), or hepatitis C (HCV)
  • People who currently have an active infection
  • People who are currently in an active stage of cancer
  • People who have another serious life-threatening illness at the same time
  • People who have a mental health or psychological condition
