  • People diagnosed with diabetes within the past 12 months, where there is no prior record of normal blood sugar levels, and whose HbA1c is 7.0% or above.

  • People already diagnosed with diabetes whose HbA1c has risen by more than 2% within the past 6 months, confirmed by a repeat test, and where weight gain or missed diabetes medications are not the cause.
  • People who are generally well or have only mild limitations in daily activity (confirm with trial site).
  • People with no known reasons preventing them from having an MRI scan or receiving gadolinium contrast dye (a substance used during MRI scans).
  • People willing to undergo MRI scanning and be checked for metal implants or metal-related injuries.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have or have had cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, or who have received additional cancer treatment (such as chemotherapy after surgery) within the past 5 years.
  • People who have received chemotherapy within the past 6 months (hormonal therapy may be acceptable if the person has been cancer-free for at least 5 years — confirm with trial site).
  • People with a hereditary condition causing recurring pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • People who have used high-dose steroid medication (such as prednisone at 20 mg or more per day) within 3 months of their diabetes diagnosis or rise in HbA1c (lower doses may be considered on a case-by-case basis — confirm with trial site).
  • People for whom MRI scanning or gadolinium contrast dye is not medically safe.
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • People with other serious health conditions that, in the treating clinician's judgement, would make participation in this trial unsuitable.
