Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who come to the emergency room with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter that started less than 48 hours ago
- People whose emergency room doctor is planning to treat the irregular heart rhythm acutely
- People who the attending emergency room doctor considers to be in generally good health
- People whose resting heart rate is 110 beats per minute or lower, either before or after treatment to slow the heart rate
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose blood pressure is too unstable (confirm with trial site)
- People who need their normal heart rhythm restored urgently because of a separate medical condition
- People who have another serious illness happening at the same time, such as severe heart failure or a heart attack
- People for whom blood thinning medication is not considered safe
- People who have a mechanical heart valve or a specific type of heart valve narrowing called mitral stenosis
- People who are expected to need to stay in hospital for more than 24 hours for any reason
- People considered to be at an especially high risk of blood clots, for example those who have previously had a stroke caused by a blood clot despite being on blood thinners
- People for whom a specific type of heart ultrasound performed through the throat (transesophageal echocardiography) is not suitable
