Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have rectal cancer that has come back in the same area after previous surgery to remove rectal or lower colon cancer, confirmed either by tissue biopsy or by scans and clinical assessment agreed upon by a specialist team
- People whose cancer can be surgically removed, either as it currently is or after receiving chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy beforehand
- People who are generally fit and able to carry out daily activities with little or no limitation (based on a standard fitness scale used by doctors)
- People who have given written agreement to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose scans show the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (such as the liver or lungs) at the time of joining the trial, or within the six months before joining
- People with a known inherited condition that prevents the body from properly breaking down certain chemotherapy drugs (known as complete DPD deficiency)
- People who have received any chemotherapy treatment in the past six months
- People for whom the planned chemotherapy would not be safe, as assessed by their cancer specialist
- People who have received radiation therapy for their rectal cancer in the past six months
- People for whom the planned combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy would not be safe, as assessed by their cancer specialist and/or radiation specialist
- People for whom surgery would not be safe, as assessed by their surgeon and/or anaesthetist
- People who have another active cancer that could interfere with the trial treatment or affect recovery after surgery (confirm with trial site)
