Who might be able to join this trial:
- People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35 kg/m² (a measure of body weight relative to height that indicates severe obesity)
- People who have been following a medically supervised obesity treatment program for at least 2 years without significant weight loss
- People who are willing to give their consent to take part in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been in a supervised obesity treatment program for less than 2 years
- People who have cancer
- People who have serious liver scarring (cirrhosis) at a certain severity level known as Child-Pugh score A
- People who have Crohn's disease (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition)
- People who have a serious psychiatric (mental health) disorder that required a stay in a psychiatric hospital within the past two years
- People who use illegal drugs
- People who have shown difficulty following medical instructions or treatment plans (confirm with trial site)
- People who have a hiatal hernia (where part of the stomach pushes up into the chest) larger than 4cm
- People whose stomach pouch measures less than 10cm (confirm with trial site)
- People who have Barrett's oesophagus (a condition affecting the lining of the food pipe)
- People who have significant inflammation of the food pipe (erosive oesophagitis) at a moderate to severe level
- People who have a narrowing of the stomach confirmed by a camera examination
- People who have test results showing excessive acid exposure or an abnormally high number of acid reflux episodes per day
- People whose lower food pipe muscle (lower oesophageal sphincter) shows abnormal function on specialised testing
- People whose swallowing and reflux tests show abnormal levels of acid or non-acid reflux
