Who may be able to join

AI generated eligibility summary. Written by an AI model from the official source data and checked on a sample basis. It can contain mistakes, so confirm anything important against the original source. How we use AI

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 18 years or older
  • People who are scheduled for a second heart rhythm procedure (ablation) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat that comes and goes), after having had a previous procedure to isolate the pulmonary veins
  • People for whom the results of their previous procedure show that the pulmonary vein isolation is still intact at the time of joining the trial

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have persistent (continuous, not coming-and-going) atrial fibrillation
  • People who had previous ablation procedures involving certain additional areas of the heart beyond the pulmonary veins, including the superior vena cava, roof line, mitral line, or a specific vein treated with ethanol (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have a blood clot in the left side of the heart, as checked by a CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound of the heart
  • People whose heart pumping function is significantly reduced (below a certain threshold measured by a heart scan)
  • People who have had heart surgery in the past 90 days
  • People expected to need a heart transplant or other heart surgery within the next 180 days
  • People who have had a heart artery procedure or stent placed in the past 90 days, or a heart attack in the past 60 days
  • People who have had a documented blood clot or stroke-related event in the past 90 days
  • People who have been diagnosed with a type of heart tumour called an atrial myxoma
  • People with significant lung disease or significant restrictive or constrictive heart or chest conditions causing ongoing symptoms
  • People with a significant birth defect or medical condition that the trial doctor believes would prevent safe participation
  • Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study period
  • People who have an acute illness or active infection at the time of the procedure
  • People with advanced kidney disease
  • People with unstable chest pain (unstable angina)
  • People with a history of abnormal blood clotting or bleeding disorders
  • People for whom blood-thinning medication is not medically appropriate
  • People with a life expectancy of less than one year
  • People who have a condition that prevents access to blood vessels needed for the procedure
  • People taking the blood thinner warfarin whose blood-thinning level is above a certain point within 24 hours before the procedure
  • People who cannot stop taking certain heart rhythm medications for reasons unrelated to their atrial fibrillation
  • People who are unwilling or unable to give informed consent to participate
