Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between 18 and 75 years of age
- People who speak English fluently, at a level sufficient to understand and answer study questions
- People who are right-handed
- People who have a confirmed diagnosis of moderate Major Depressive Disorder (a single or repeated episode), with a score of at least 17 on a standard depression rating scale called the HAM-D17
- People whose depression has not responded to at least 2 different antidepressant medications, from at least 2 different medication types
- People who have also tried at least 2 additional evidence-based treatments added on top of antidepressants (not including medications called benzodiazepines)
- People who have completed a course of talk therapy (psychotherapy) that is recognised as effective for depression, at an appropriate frequency and length
- People who have a confirmed diagnosis of Fibromyalgia (FM) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), with at least moderate pain, scoring 15 or more on a standard pain questionnaire called the McGill Pain Questionnaire
- People whose pain has been present for at least 3 months before joining the study
- People who are able and willing to attend all required study visits and follow the treatment schedule
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are unable to give informed consent due to mental or legal incapacity
- People who are pregnant
- People who currently have active thoughts of suicide or a suicide plan
- People who have previously received Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment
- People who have an infection or poor skin condition on the scalp where the treatment device would be placed
- People with an increased risk of seizures, due to family history, a previous stroke, or current use of medications that raise seizure risk
- People experiencing psychotic depression or other psychotic conditions (such as schizophrenia or related disorders) during their current depressive episode
- People with neurological conditions such as epilepsy, stroke-related brain disease, dementia, increased pressure in the brain, a history of repeated or severe head injuries, or tumours in the brain or nervous system
- People who have certain metal or magnetic devices implanted in their body, such as a cochlear implant, pacemaker, defibrillator, infusion pump, vagus nerve stimulator, aneurysm clips or coils, metal prostheses, staples, or stents (note: standard dental fillings are considered acceptable — confirm with trial site if unsure about a specific device)
