Who might be able to join this trial:
This trial has three different groups of participants. Here are the criteria for each:
As a Client Participant (person receiving support):
- People aged 60 years or older
- People who attend one of the 18 participating senior centres in Seattle, New York City, or Tampa
- People who score 10 or higher on a standard depression screening questionnaire (PHQ-9) during routine screening
- People whose depression is confirmed as moderate-to-severe through a clinical interview (HAM-D score above 14)
- People who score within the normal range on a standard memory and thinking assessment (confirm with trial site for exact score thresholds)
- People who are either not currently taking antidepressant medication, or who have been on a stable antidepressant dose for at least 12 weeks
- People who are able to give written consent to take part in both the research assessment and the support programme
As a Volunteer Participant:
- People aged 60 years or older
- People who attend one of the participating senior centres in Seattle, New York City, or Tampa
As a Clinician Participant:
- People who hold a Master's degree in social work, counselling, marriage and family therapy, or another clinical mental health field
- People who speak English or Spanish
- People who are able to give consent for all parts of the study
- People who are willing to have their sessions audio recorded for supervision and evaluation purposes
Who may not be able to join:
Client Participants:
- People who are currently experiencing active thoughts of suicide
- People who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition other than non-psychotic major depression or generalised anxiety disorder (as confirmed through a structured clinical interview)
- People with a severe or life-threatening medical illness, such as end-stage organ failure
- People who are unable to speak English or Spanish
Volunteer Participants:
- People who currently have major depressive disorder, alcohol or substance use issues, or symptoms of mania, hypomania, or psychosis (as confirmed through a structured clinical interview)
- People whose scores on the memory and thinking assessment fall below the required threshold (confirm with trial site for exact details)
- People who are unable to speak and read English or Spanish
Clinician Participants:
- People who do not speak English or Spanish
- People who do not hold a qualifying Master's degree in a clinical mental health field
- People who are unable to provide consent
- People who are unwilling to have sessions audio recorded
