Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 to 60 years old, of any gender
  • People whose main current diagnosis is Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
  • People who score at least 50 on a self-rated Social Anxiety scale called the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale
  • People who are fluent in English
  • People who are willing and able to give written consent to take part
  • People who are able to participate responsibly in the study procedures
  • People who have normal vision, or vision that is fully corrected (for example, with glasses or contact lenses)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had, or currently have, a psychotic episode, psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder
  • People who currently have severe depression
  • People who currently have thoughts of suicide or have engaged in suicidal behaviour
  • People currently diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, a manic episode, or a tic disorder
  • People who have a current or past diagnosis of a brain-related organic condition, seizure disorder, epilepsy, or brain injury
  • People with a current medical illness that is unstable or not being treated
  • People with a severe alcohol use disorder, severe cannabis use disorder, or any substance use disorder of any severity (other than nicotine-related disorders)
  • People who have taken any psychiatric medication in the past month, unless they have been on a stable dose of an SSRI antidepressant for at least 3 months
  • People who are currently undergoing cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or any other form of psychotherapy that started within the past 3 months
  • People who are pregnant, or who plan to become pregnant during the study period (pregnancy will be checked using a urine test)
  • People who cannot have an MRI scan due to certain metal objects in or on their body, including pacemakers, metal implants or prostheses, surgical clips, shrapnel, a medically necessary patch that cannot be removed, or certain tattoos (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are unable to tolerate MRI scanning procedures, for example due to severe obesity or claustrophobia
