Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older.
- People who have been assessed as probably having diabetic nerve damage, confirmed using a specific set of medical criteria that requires all three of the following to be present: symptoms of sensory nerve problems, reduced feeling in the hands or feet, and reduced ankle reflexes.
- People who have had definite or probable nerve pain for at least the last 6 months.
- People whose average pain level over the past week has been rated higher than 4 out of 10 on a pain scale.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have other causes of pain in the same area, or other pain that cannot be clearly separated from the nerve pain.
- People who are unable to understand and speak Danish.
- People who are unable to cooperate with the trial requirements.
- People taking Warfarin or other blood-thinning or similar medications that would make a nerve block injection unsafe (confirm with trial site).
- People who have an active infection in the area where the injection would be given.
- People with a known allergy to lidocaine (a local anaesthetic).
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Women of childbearing age would need to show a negative pregnancy test or confirm use of contraception.
- People who have had severe psychiatric illness, such as severe depression, within the last 6 months.
- People with a current problem with alcohol or drug misuse.
