Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer (a specific type called adenocarcinoma) confirmed by a tissue sample.
- People whose cancer has been classified by MRI scan as either Stage II (a certain tumour size with no spread to nearby lymph nodes) or Stage III (varying tumour sizes with some spread to nearby lymph nodes).
- People whose cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.
- People whose tumour can be surgically removed.
- People who are well enough to carry out most daily activities (as assessed by standard medical performance scales).
- People whose blood test results show healthy enough levels of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
- People whose blood test results show the liver is functioning within acceptable limits.
- Women who could potentially become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy blood test before starting radiation treatment.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently receiving treatment for a different cancer.
- People who have signs of cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body, as shown by a PET/CT scan or CT scan of the chest and abdomen taken within 6 weeks of starting radiation therapy.
- People who have previously had radiation therapy in the same area of the body, where the new radiation fields would overlap with prior treatment areas.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who have a medical or psychological reason that prevents them from having an MRI scan.
