Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have at least one trigger point (a tight, tender knot of muscle) in the muscles alongside their lower spine
- People with ongoing (chronic) low back pain whose current flare-up is meaningfully worse than their usual baseline pain level, as measured on a standard pain scale
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are allergic to, or unable to take, the medications being used in the study
- People who have developed new weakness, numbness, or loss of feeling in their legs
- People with a known active cancer that has spread to the bones of the spine
- People with a confirmed fracture in the spine, lower back, hip area, or sacral region
- People with a history of fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis (a type of spinal inflammatory disease)
- People who are currently taking blood-thinning medication
- People who have a skin infection (cellulitis) over the area where an injection would be given
- People who have had surgery on the spine, hip, or pelvis within the past 6 months
- People who have already received trigger point injections for this current episode of back pain
- People whose pain travels down the back of the leg all the way to the heel (sciatica)
- People whose pain has a clearly identified cause other than muscle or musculoskeletal pain
- People who currently have a fever
- People who are pregnant
- People who are unable to understand English or cannot give informed consent for any reason, including difficulty understanding instructions, risks, or benefits — or people in certain groups such as prisoners, students, military cadets or midshipmen, resident physicians, or wounded warriors (confirm with trial site)
