Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 80 years old (male or female)
- People whose tissue sample (biopsy) from a colonoscopy has confirmed a type of bowel cancer called colorectal adenocarcinoma
- People whose tumour is located close to the lower end of the bowel — within a specific distance from the opening of the bottom (confirm with trial site for exact measurements)
- People whose heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and bone marrow are functioning well enough to safely undergo surgery and anaesthesia
- People whose cancer was at an early-to-moderate stage on initial MRI scan (classified as T2, T3A, or T3B, with certain lymph node findings), with no signs of cancer spreading into nearby blood vessels, surgical margins, or certain nearby lymph node groups
- People whose cancer has shown a complete response after pre-surgery treatment (called neoadjuvant therapy) — meaning no visible tumour found on physical examination, no abnormal findings on bowel camera examination (only minor scar tissue or similar), no remaining tumour visible on MRI or ultrasound, and a normal blood marker level (CEA)
- People who have signed a consent form agreeing to participate in the surgical study
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a previous history of a cancerous bowel tumour
- People who need emergency surgery due to a blocked, perforated, or bleeding bowel
- People whose cancer has spread to lymph nodes in a way that cannot be surgically removed
- People who have recently been diagnosed with another type of cancer
- People who have taken part in, or are currently taking part in, another clinical trial within the 4 weeks before joining
- People rated as high risk for surgery based on standard anaesthesia or physical fitness scoring tools (confirm with trial site)
- People whose liver, kidney, heart, lung, or blood-clotting functions are too poor to safely tolerate surgery, or who have other serious existing health conditions
- People with a history of serious mental illness
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with an infection that is not under control
- People who the trial doctor considers unsuitable based on other clinical or test findings
