Arm 1 — Patients:
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 60 or older who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer or blood disorder
- People who have already received a stem cell transplant (using their own or a donor's cells) within the past 3 to 6 months
- People who can speak and read English
- People who have signed a written consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- There are no exclusion criteria for patients in Arm 1
Arm 1 — Care-Partners (a support person for the patient):
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 19 or older who can speak and read English
Who may not be able to join:
- There are no exclusion criteria for care-partners in Arm 1
Arm 1 — Transplant Team Members:
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 19 or older who can speak and read English
Who may not be able to join:
- There are no exclusion criteria for transplant team members in Arm 1
Arms 2 and 3 — Patients:
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 55 or older who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer or blood disorder
- People who are scheduled to receive a stem cell transplant (using their own or a donor's cells)
- People who are able to walk 4 metres as part of a standard physical ability test, with or without assistance
- People who can speak and read English
- People who have signed a written consent form agreeing to take part
- (Arm 3 only) People who are willing to be randomly assigned to either start a physical activity program before the transplant or after 180 days following the transplant, and who are willing to follow the program as assigned
Who may not be able to join:
- People who experience chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, or other safety concerns during the physical ability test
- People who have not been cleared by a doctor to participate in exercise
- People who have had a heart attack in the past 3 months, or who have certain ongoing heart conditions such as unstable chest pain, serious irregular heartbeat, a specific type of heart blockage (3rd degree heart block), severe heart failure, or a significant narrowing of a heart valve — these people would need written clearance from a heart specialist before being considered (confirm with trial site)
- People who have had a hip fracture, hip or knee replacement, or spinal surgery in the past 3 months — these people would need written clearance from a surgeon before being considered
- People whose medical, mental health, or behavioural circumstances, in the opinion of the lead researcher, may affect their ability to participate fully in the study
- (Arm 3 only, and only for those agreeing to optional blood, saliva, and brain scan measures) People with certain brain conditions documented in their medical history, including significant past brain injury with lasting effects, brain cancer, large stroke-related brain changes, or a remaining blood clot on the brain
- (Arm 3 only, optional measures) People with a history of a major stroke that has left noticeable lasting effects
- (Arm 3 only, optional measures) People with a history of relapsing and remitting Multiple Sclerosis
- (Arm 3 only, optional measures) People currently experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of a primary mental health condition
Arms 2 and 3 — Care-Partners:
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 19 or older who can speak and read English
- People who are able to walk 4 metres as part of a standard physical ability test, with or without assistance
- People who have no medical reasons preventing them from taking part in light to moderate physical activity, based on a review of their medical history by the lead researcher
Who may not be able to join:
- People who experience chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, or other safety concerns during the physical ability test
- People who have not been cleared by a doctor to participate in exercise
- People who have had a heart attack in the past 3 months, or who have certain ongoing heart conditions such as unstable chest pain, serious irregular heartbeat, a specific type of heart blockage (3rd degree heart block), severe heart failure, or a significant narrowing of a heart valve — these people would need written clearance from a heart specialist before being considered (confirm with trial site)
