Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are scheduled to have one of five specific chest or heart surgeries: coronary artery bypass grafting (heart bypass surgery), aortic valve replacement, aortic valve repair, lung resection (removal of part of the lung), or esophagectomy (removal of part of the food pipe)
  • People who are over 18 years old
  • People who do not have a cognitive or psychiatric condition that would prevent them from understanding and agreeing to take part in the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose heart is not pumping properly (cardiogenic shock) at the time of surgery
  • People with severe, permanent high blood pressure that cannot be treated
  • People who were born with a structural heart condition (congenital heart disease)
  • People with significant long-term kidney problems, defined by certain blood test results or those already receiving kidney replacement treatment such as dialysis
  • People with evidence of serious liver disease or liver failure
  • People who have smell-related allergies or who have lost their sense of smell
