Who might be able to join this trial:
For the skin swab part of the study:
- People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (observation group), or people who have been confirmed not to have diabetes (control group)
- People aged 18 or older who, along with their family if applicable, are willing to take part
For the skin tissue part of the study:
- People with type 2 diabetes who are already scheduled for a surgical procedure such as wound cleaning (debridement) or an amputation below the knee — for reasons such as diabetic foot bone infection, a fracture, or a vehicle accident (observation group)
- People without type 2 diabetes who are already scheduled for a similar surgical procedure below the knee — for reasons such as a post-injury foot bone infection, a fracture, or a vehicle accident (control group)
- People aged 18 or older who, along with their family if applicable, are willing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have other skin conditions or diseases
- People who use medically prescribed soap for bathing
- People who apply cosmetics or beauty products to their feet
- People with severe liver or kidney disease
- People with an immune system disease or HIV infection
- People with a malignant tumour (cancer)
- People who have used immunosuppressive (immune-suppressing) medications within the four weeks before joining
- People, or whose family members, who do not wish to take part in the study
- People the research team considers unsuitable for the study for other reasons (confirm with trial site)
