Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older and are able to understand and agree to participate in the trial.
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer (a type of cancer called adenocarcinoma) that has been confirmed by examination or scans, has not spread to nearby lymph nodes, and still has some cancer remaining after receiving radiation therapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy — and who are scheduled to have a specific type of bowel surgery called TME (total mesorectal excision).
- People whose cancer has come back after an earlier period where no cancer could be detected (sometimes called "watch and wait") are also eligible, as long as the return of cancer has been confirmed by camera examination of the bowel and/or a scan.
- At least 6 weeks must have passed between the end of radiation or chemoradiation treatment and the planned surgery.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who received a type of internal radiation treatment called brachytherapy as part of their cancer treatment before surgery.
- People under 18 years of age, or those who are unable to give informed consent.
- People who did not receive radiation therapy or combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy before surgery.
- People who are not scheduled to have TME surgery for the confirmed type and stage of rectal cancer described above.
- People for whom fewer than 6 weeks have passed between finishing neoadjuvant treatment and the planned surgery date.
