Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between 21 and 65 years old
  • People who have not used cannabis for at least 30 days before joining
  • People who have had lower back pain lasting three months or longer
  • People who are not currently taking opioid medications
  • Women who are able to become pregnant must not be pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of joining
  • People who do not have any mental or neurological conditions that affect their ability to feel sensations or move normally

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with an active lung or breathing disease
  • People who have had an allergy, bad reaction, or negative experience with cannabis in the past
  • People whose urine drug test shows the presence of THC, barbiturates, opioids, oxycodone, or methadone
  • People with a significant illness such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or liver disease
  • People who currently have or have previously had a condition that affects the immune system, such as lupus, psoriasis, or multiple sclerosis
  • People who currently have or have previously had a neurological condition, including Parkinson's disease, dementia, memory or thinking problems, a history of seizures, or a history of brain or head injury
  • People who currently have a major psychiatric illness such as bipolar disorder, severe depression, psychosis, a substance use disorder, or schizophrenia
  • People who currently have or have previously had thoughts of suicide or have made a suicide attempt
  • People who have a known sensitivity to heat or cold stimulation on the skin (confirm with trial site)
  • People whose resting blood pressure is above 140/90
  • People whose resting heart rate is above 100 beats per minute
  • People who are currently in prison
  • People who are currently living in an institution (such as a care facility) (confirm with trial site)
  • People who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
  • People who have any condition or implant that makes an MRI scan unsafe (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have started any new pain management treatment within two weeks before enrolling, or who plan to start a new pain management treatment during the study
  • People with a known history of fainting, loss of consciousness, or severe reactions related to blood draws or needle procedures
