Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years and younger than 85 years old.
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of rectal cancer called rectal adenocarcinoma, confirmed by a biopsy or tissue test before surgery.
- People for whom surgeons plan a specific type of rectal surgery, called total mesorectal excision, with the goal of fully removing the cancer.

Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding.

- People whose surgery involves a procedure called a Hartmann procedure or the creation of a colostomy (a surgical opening on the abdomen for waste removal).
- People whose surgery is interrupted or paused for more than 30 minutes for any reason.
- People who have a cancer affecting another organ in addition to the rectal cancer.
