Who might be able to join this trial:
- Women who have been through menopause, with no menstrual period for more than 12 months
- Women who have not used any hormone therapies in the past 12 months
- Women aged 50 years or older
- People who are able to give informed consent to participate
- People who are willing to be randomly assigned to a study group
- People whose resting blood pressure (the top number) is 120 mmHg or higher
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) below 40
- People whose weight has been stable (changed by less than 2 kg) in the past 3 months, and who are willing to keep their weight stable throughout the study
- People whose blood pressure medications and other medications have not changed in the past 3 months, and who are willing to keep their medication routine the same during the study
- People who are generally in good health, except for having high blood pressure
Who may not be able to join:
- People younger than 50 years of age
- People who went through menopause before age 45
- People who have had a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus)
- People with a history of severely uncontrolled high blood pressure (top number above 180 mmHg and/or bottom number above 120 mmHg)
- People who currently smoke
- People with alcohol dependence or misuse
- People whose blood pressure responds abnormally during exercise (confirm with trial site for specific details)
- People who already do regular intense aerobic or endurance exercise more than 4 times per week, for more than 30 minutes at a time, at a high level of effort
